Even Peyton Manning has admitted that this very well might be his “last rodeo“, but there’s at least one franchise hoping he’ll change his mind.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, “The Rams have had internal discussions about bringing Peyton Manning to Los Angeles should he want to play another season, per a league source.”
Manning, who would be 40 years old next season, would have to part ways with the Denver Broncos first, as he’s still under contract for the 2016 season, but that’s all but a certainty at this point. The Broncos can part ways with Manning this offseason and save $19 million towards the salary cap; that would be some much-needed pocket change for a team looking to bring back several key free agents.
But if Manning does make the decision to return for one more season, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Rams did throw their hats in the ring. Barring another addition, Jeff Fisher has stated that Case Keenum will be the starter entering the offseason, with Nick Foles and Sean Mannion competing, too.
Even in the depleted state that he’s in, one would expect Manning to outperform guys like Keenum, Foles and Mannion. Plus, bringing The Sheriff in would be a great way to kick things off in Los Angeles, and Manning would undoubtedly enjoy the warm southern Californian weather, too.
As of now, though, all that matters is Super Bowl 50. The rest will work itself out.
“I’ve tried to stay in the moment, tried not to look back,” Manning said at Super Bowl Opening Night. “Just tried to stay in the moment.”
