The Los Angeles Angels defeated the Colorado Rockies Wednesday afternoon, 8-0. The loss ended Colorado’s six-game win streak and was their first loss in the month of May.
Left-handed pitcher Tyler Anderson took the mound for the Rockies, looking to push the team to victory and a two-game sweep of the American League visitors. Although Anderson was able to keep the Rockies in the ballgame, the Angels were able to carve up four runs on him en route to victory.
Los Angeles wasted no time in the ballgame as Zack Cozart opened things up with a leadoff double and then scored on an RBI single hit by baseball phenom Mike Trout.
After working a clean second inning, Anderson made two mistakes in the third inning, as he surrendered a solo home run to Cozart and a two-run shot to Justin Upton which pushed Los Angeles ahead 4-0.
Cozart hit an additional solo home run in the seventh inning off of relief pitcher Chris Rusin.
The Angels blew the game open in the eighth inning by scoring an additional two runs. Upton whacked a leadoff double off of Rockies’ relief pitcher Brooks Pounders and then scored when Albert Pujols hit an RBI double to right field. Jefry Marte then pinch-ran for Pujols and was driven home by an RBI single hit by Ian Kinsler, extending the Angels’ lead to 7-0.
Los Angeles put the icing on the cake in the 9th inning by adding an additional run when Mike Dunn walked home Andrelton Simmons.
The Rockies’ offense was held in check all afternoon as they failed to record a single run despite recording eight hits.
It’s worth noting that Rockies first baseman Ian Desmond went 0-4 with four strikeouts in Wednesday’s affair and was booed by Rockies fans at Coors Field as they watched his batting average drop to .176 on the season.
