Well, it happened again, folks. For the second straight game the Rockies took a lead late into the ballgame and failed to hold it.
Monday’s fiasco seemed to be in the rearview mirror for the Rox as they came out firing on all cylinders, scoring four runs in the first three inning; however, come crunch time, the Rockies crumbled.
Starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood had a dazzling performance, throwing 6 2/3 innings of two-run baseball. When he fell into some trouble, manager Walt Weiss summoned Scott Oberg from the bullpen. Oberg did his job in the seventh, but failed in the eigth, allowing the tieing and leading runs to cross the plate.
For Oberg it was just a tough outing.
“It’s about going out there and throwing good pitches,” Oberg said. “Unfortunately, today I did not do that. The guys fought hard, and I did not get it done today.”
The sense in the clubhouse was frustration for a team that is now sitting five games back of the second Wild Card spot in the National League.
“We gotta keep trying,” Weiss said. “We have enough talent to go out there and get it done, definitely hitting a tough stretch right here … I believe our guys will right the ship.”
Now, after dropping two winnable games at home, the Rockies will hit the road to finish up a four-game home-and-home series with the Rangers, a team that has a record of 34-17 at home.
