The Colorado Rockies defeated the Philadelphia Phillies Tuesday night at Coors Field, 10-3; improving their record to 87-70 on the season – matching last season’s total.
Chad Bettis took the mound for Colorado as a spot starter and hurled 2-2/3 innings, allowing three hits and an earned runs before giving way to a parade of Rockies relievers: D.J. Johnson – who earned the win — Chris Rusin, Jake McGee, Scott Oberg, Yency Almonte, Harrison Musgrave, and Bryan Shaw, who finished the game and locked up the victory.
However, before the Rockies exploded for 14 hits, they found themselves down 1-0 in the third inning following an RBI single from Phillies’ outfielder Odubel Herrera.
The Rockies answered in the bottom of the third inning, with Charlie Blackmon and DJ LeMahieu each recording two-out singles. From there, David Dahl crushed a home run to left field to put the Rockies ahead 3-1.
The Rockies blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Chris Iannetta whacked a single to deep center field, Blackmon hit an RBI double to right center field. LeMahieu then followed with an RBI single to center that put Colorado on-top, 5-1. Nolan Arenado later scored a run via an infield single.
The Rockies’ run barrage continued into the bottom of the fifth inning where Carlos Gonzalez hit a pinch-hit double to center field, scoring two runs to extend the Rockies lead to 8-1.
The Phillies scored a pair of run in the top half of the sixth inning via an RBI double off the bat of Scott Kingery and a wild pitch from Oberg.
Despite Philadelphia’s efforts, the Rockies put the icing on the cake in the bottom of the seventh inning as LeMahieu and Dahl both continued to stay hot at the plate, each hitting RBI singles which put Colorado ahead 10-3.
Blackmon extended his hitting streak to 17 games in the victory, the longest active streak in all of baseball.
In addition to the Rockies’ victory, the St. Louis Cardinals lost to the Milwaukee Brewers Tuesday night, allowing Colorado to establish a half-game lead on the second and final National League Wild Card Spot. The Rockies, with five games remaining in their schedule are looking to make the postseason in back-to-back seasons for the first time in franchise history.
The Rockies and Phillies will continue their series Wednesday night at Coors Field with first pitch set for 6:40 MST.
