From all offense, to a pitchers’ duel.
Baseball is a great game, because, you never know what you’re going to get.
On Friday night in Los Angeles, Tyler Anderson and Rich Hill put on a dazzling display of pitching prowess, as the Rockies beat their division rivals 3-0 on the road thanks to a gem pitched by Anderson.
Anderson sat down the first 11 batters he faced, giving up a single in the fourth inning before ending that frame without allowing any damage. The next inning, Pat Valaika came through huge, barreling a ball and taking it deep for a solo shot and the Rockies only run on the night. In the eighth inning, it was Nolan Arenado’s turn to turn on a fastball inside and take it yard, his NL-leading 20th home run of the season. In the ninth, it was Chris Iannetta joining the party with a solo homer of his own.
Pitching has been a weak point for Colorado as of late, but Anderson’s excellence was unquestioned on this night. He went 8.0 innings pitched, striking out eight while giving up only four hits.
For the Rockies, this marks a huge win because it’s back-to-back victories after D.J. LeMahieu’s comeback homer in the ninth inning last night against the Giants. Before that win in San Francisco Thursday, the Rockies had lost four straight.
While they’re still two games under .500, at 39-41, Colorado is playing better baseball the last two days than we’ve seen for the majority of the month of June, where they’re now 10-16.
Anderson improved to 5-3 on the season and the Rockies had won six of his last eight road starts, meaning they’ve now won 7-9 when he starts away from Coors Field. Not only did he dominate on the mound, but the starting pitcher also had two hits, including one against Hill in the top of the seventh, which ran the starter from the game.
Anderson was not allowed to pitch the ninth inning despite the Rockies scoring two insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
L.A. was able to score a run in the ninth when, with two outs, Wade Davis gave up a solo home run to Justin Turner to make the game 3-1.
Next up, Colorado faces L.A. again tomorrow at 5:10 p.m. MT.
Note: Patrick SaundersArenado’s home run was his 7th in the last 10 games (h/t to for looking that up and sharing on Twitter).
