For only the fifth time this season, the Colorado Rockies have lost consecutive games. Well, technically it’s the sixth time if you count the three consecutive losses they suffered at the hands of the Washington Nationals in April. On Wednesday, they’ll try and avoid that same fate against the Seattle Mariners after dropping Tuesday night’s game, 10-4, at Coors Field. With the loss and a Dodgers win, Colorado falls from first place in the National League West.
Tyler Anderson struggled early, allowing three runs in the second and three runs in the third to dig a hole the Rockies could not climb out of. Anderson failed to get the leadoff hitter out in each inning, including a leadoff walk in the second. In total, Anderson surrendered 11 hits over five innings pitched. He walked three and surrendered a two-run home run in the second. Mike Dunn‘s struggles continued, as he too allowed a home run. Carlos Estevez, who was just recalled from Triple-A after Adam Ottavino was placed on the 10-day DL, struggled in the ninth. He allowed three runs on five hits in the inning.
Offensively, Colorado earned seven scattered hits off five Seattle pitchers. Trevor Story was the only Rockies player with multiple hits in the game. He also scored a run and took a walk. DJ LeMahieu drove in three of Colorado’s four runs with his only hit of the night. The Rockies were just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position in the loss.
After dropping both games of a two-game series against the Mariners at home, Colorado must turn around and face Seattle again for the next two games – these at Safeco Field.
Colorado has lost consecutive games in only five stretches this season. They lost to the Dodgers and Padres on April 9 and 10. They dropped three in a row to the Nationals from April 25 to 27. They lost one to the Diamondbacks and one to the Padres on April 30 and May 2. They took a consecutive losses to the Dodgers earlier this month, and now back-to-back games to the Mariners.
Antonio Senzatela (7-1, 3.19 ERA) will try to serve as the stopper for Colorado. He did just that the last time the Rockies dropped two in a row, against Los Angeles on May 12 and 13.
