Remember that potent Rockies’ lineup? The one that put 16 runs up against the Padres less than one ago? You’re forgiven if you don’t.
The Rockies dropped their fourth consecutive game on Thursday as they were shut out for the second consecutive game by those same Padres. In those two losses, plus the latter half of Tuesday’s 4-3 loss to the Giants in San Francisco, the Rockies have scored exactly one run in their last 25 innings.

No wonder they’re 0-4 on this pivotal road trip, ceding ground to the Brewers — who, by all rights, should probably have passed the Rockies by now if it wasn’t for two straight hard-luck losses — and the rapidly approaching Cardinals, who’ve won three straight and sit only a game-and-a-half behind the reeling Rockies.
The back-to-back donuts weren’t exactly due to Cy Young winners taking the mound for the Rockies’ opponents, either. Giants starter Matt Moore left Wednesday’s game with a 6-14 record and a 5.20 ERA, and that’s after shutting the Rockies down. Padres starter Clayton Richard left Petco Park with a win that raised his record to 8-14 and lowered his ERA to 4.63.
Simply put, the Rockies — who have assured themselves of a losing road trip against the worst two teams in their division — hold their slim wild-card lead in an open palm. Unless they start playing like a playoff team… they won’t be.
