The luck for the Colorado Rockies and the training room soured once again Tuesday. With the promotion of Chi Chi Gonzalez for the night’s start on the mound, Brendan Rodgers was sent to the 10-day injured list.
For Rodgers, the injury was deemed a right shoulder impingement. The stint with the Rockies, prior to his departure, was the second of the year for the young shortstop.
In place of Trevor Story, Rodgers had started the last three games for the club before last night’s win over the Giants. Through the three games, he was 0-for-10 with five punchouts. On the year, the slump further dropped his average to .224 with 27 strikeouts in only 76 at-bats.
The injury further depleted the shortstop position for the Rockies who lost Story last week to a right thumb sprain after sliding head first. A timetable has been hazy for the star, though he has yet to rule out a quick return.
Gonzalez’ promotion is his first since 2016. After undergoing Tommy John surgery, he was able to latch on with the Rockies on a minor league pact before the year.
In 14 starts with Triple-A Albuquerque, the hurler has gone 76.1 innings and allowed 48 earned runs, good for a 5.66 earned run average. The run allotment is lessened when adding the context of the Pacific Coast League’s hitter-friendly environment.
He will look to continue a trend of quality outings for the Rockies who already have five quality starts from their rotation through seven games of their nine-game road trip.
Opposing Gonzalez will be Madison Bumgarner, the San Francisco Giants’ primary trade candidate as the deadline approaches.
