Coors Field has historically been known to feature the long ball, and that was the case Saturday night.

The Colorado Rockies dropped their sixth consecutive game at Coors Field as they fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks 12-7, a game which featured six home runs between the two teams.

This one started off with a bang as Paul Goldschmidt blasted a solo home run in the second at-bat of the evening to give Arizona a quick lead in the second game of the series.

The Rockies managed to respond in the bottom half of the opening frame by scoring a pair of runs to take the lead. D.J. LeMahieu started the inning with a single and later strolled around the bases when Trevor Story crushed a 3-2 cutter to straight away center field to give Colorado a 2-1 lead.

Despite establishing a lead early in the ballgame, the Rockies allowed the Diamondbacks to tie the contest in the second inning as they hit another solo home run, this time off the bat of Nick Ahmed which evened the score at 2-2.

Colorado went down quietly in the corresponding half inning; however, they clapped back in the third as starting pitcher Chad Bettis worked a clean frame. The Rockies scored another pair of runs which again came off the bat of Story who belted another two-run homer to give Colorado a lead they would be unable to hold.

Goldschmidt followed by hitting his second home run of the day, a three-run moonshot to left field which put Arizona on-top 5-4 in the fourth inning.

The Rockies answered again in the bottom half of the fourth which started with a walk issued to Ian Desmond. Youngster Noel Cuevas then reached base on a single. Later in the inning, Ryan McMahon pinch-hit for Bettis and knocked in a run via a sacrifice fly. LeMahieu then drove home an additional two runs by raking a home run to centerfield, putting Colorado back ahead 7-5

The fifth and sixth innings were clean on both sides with the Diamondbacks adding a run in the seventh inning.

Colorado took a one-run lead into the eighth inning, but ended the inning in a state of disarray as relief pitcher Bryan Shaw managed not just to allow Arizona to take the lead, but blow the game wide open and solidify another head-scratching loss for the boys on Blake Street.

Shaw relieved Jake McGee, who worked a clean seventh inning and immediately found himself in trouble by surrendering a hit to pinch-hitter John Ryan Murphy. Things only got worse from there as Ketel Marte hit a routine dribbler back to Shaw, a ball that could have resulted in a double-play, one he juggled and then airmailed past first baseman Ian Desmond. The two errors resulted in the tieing run scoring and Marte advancing to third base.

A routine groundball turned into a nightmare for the Rockies and Shaw who has been putrid for the team since signing a three-year, $27-million-dollar contract last offseason.

Following the mishaps, boos rained down from the bleachers of Coors Field as Shaw continued to struggle on the hill and ultimately allowed Arizona to take the lead on an RBI single hit by Jake Lamb. Still rattled on the mound, manager Bud Black opted to stick with Shaw, a decision that backfired once again. Shaw went on to allow another four runs in the inning before finally being pulled in favor of Brooks Pounders, who was able to get Colorado out of the inning, although Arizona had taken a 12-7 lead when it was all over.

Due to the error, Shaw technically only allowed one earned run, but departed with a line of two-thirds innings pitched, surrendering six runs on four hits while also earning the loss. Shaw has really struggled this season in all aspects and now owns an ERA of 7.03 on the year.

Lost in the chaos of the game was the season debut of pitcher Jeff Hoffman. Hoffman, the centerpiece in the trade that sent Troy Tulowitzki north of the border, was solid in his first outing at the Major League level this season as he logged 2.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out two batters.

Colorado now sits at 32-32, 2.5 games back of the Diamondbacks and the Rockies are now in third behind the L.A. Dodgers as well.

The Rockies and Diamondbacks will conclude their series Sunday afternoon at Coors Field with first pitch set for 1:10 MST.
