Despite phenomenal pitching by German Marquez, the Rockies offense struggled as they lost 3-2, Thursday night to the San Diego Padres.
The Padres struck first; Austin Hedges hit a triple to score Hunter Renfroe and then Hedges was hit home by Freddy Galvis as San Diego took the 2-0 lead.
Outside of that triple, German Marquez was en fuego Thursday night. He struck out 13 — a career-record — while going 8 innings and giving up two runs.
Colorado finally got on the board in the fourth inning. Trevor Story was hit in the hip and then Matt Holliday walked before Ian Desmond reached on an infield hit to score Story. 2-1, San Diego, mid-fourth. The Rockies eventually loaded the bases that inning but weren’t able to put any more runs on the board.
Even with that run, the Rockies went into the sixth inning without a single hit; five reached on errors (three), a hit batter and a walk.
Finally, in the sixth inning, they recorded their first hit with Matt Holliday singling, and later that inning Story was sent home by a groundout by Ian Desmond. So, mid-way through the sixth, the game was tied up 2-2.
Fast forward to the 13th and Franmail Reyes hit a solo home run to give the Padres the win.

Marquez’s 13 strikeouts weren’t just a career-high, he became only the fifth pitcher in Rockies history to record 13 or more Ks in a single game.
