The Colorado Rockies announced Thursday that they have recalled infielder Brendan Rodgers from Triple-A Albuquerque and have placed infielder Trevor Story on the 10-day injured list with a right thumb sprain. Story injured the thumb sliding into second base during Wednesday night’s win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Though the thumb is sound structurally, the expectation is the shortstop will be out for an extended period:
Trevor Story (right thumb sprain) will miss multiple weeks, but he suffered no serious structural damage and will not need surgery.

This is the second time this season that Rodgers will be on the Rockies’ active roster. He made his Major League debut on May 17th and was optioned to Albuquerque on June 17th. Rodgers batted .246 (16-for-65) with seven runs, two doubles, seven RBI, four walks and 22 strikeouts across 21 games in his first career stint on the active roster.
The youngster will be tasked with shouldering the load at shortstop in Story’s stead. Originally, Rodgers was drafted at of Lake Mary High School as a shortstop before being moved across the diamond to second in an effort to accelerate his climb through the Rockies’ minor league system.
Pat Valaika will also likely see a share of the position with the club’s superstar on the mend.
For Story, this will be the third time in his career he has been placed on the injured list. In 2016, he was placed on IL with a torn ligament in his left thumb. In 2017, it was a strained left shoulder that took him out of action. In 71 games this season has batted .294 (87-for-296) with 65 runs, 20 doubles, two triples, 17 home runs, 48 RBI, 27 walks, 86 strikeouts and 12 stolen bases.
The Rockies currently have 39 players on their 40-man roster.
