And you thought yesterday’s game had a lot of offense.
Today, in Texas, the Rangers walked off winners in the bottom of the ninth inning when Jose Trevino hit a walk-off winner to push Texas ahead of the Colorado Rockies 13-12.
The Rockies jumped out to the 1-0 lead in the first inning on D.J. LaMahieu’s home run to lead off the game. That should have been fair warning to all involved, this game was going to be bananas offensively.
In the fourth inning, Colorado put three more on the board and stormed ahead 4-0. Gerardo Parra singled to score Carlos Gonzalez, Ian Desmond singed to score Trevor Story and Tom Murphy reached on a fielder’s choice, which scored Parra.
But, that lead would be short-lived.
Mazara hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth to get the scoring going for Texas.
Carlos Gonzalez “answered back” as his groundout pushed Charlie Blackmon across the plate to make it 5-1 Rockies in the fifth.
In the bottom of the sixth, Texas was awoken, storming ahead to steal the lead at 6-5. Shin-Soo Choo singled, scoring Ronald Guzman. Mazara then singled to score Shin-Soo Choo and Jurickson Profar smashed a three-run home run to take that one-run lead.
Even with 11 runs already scored, the offense was just heating up for each team.
After Ryan McMahon singled and LeMahieu hit a ground-rule double, Alex Claudio was pulled from the game. He pitched one full inning in relief of Yovani Gallardo, who went 5.0 innings, giving up five earned runs with four strikeouts.
That began a five-run seventh for Colorado, who pushed back ahead 10-6. Blackmon singled to score McMahon, Arenado singled to score LeMahieu, and Gonzalez singled before Parra doubled, scoring Blackmon, Arenado and Gonzalez.
There was Texas, once again, scoring more runs in the bottom of the seventh. This time, three in all, to bring the game closer at 10-9.
After a silent eighth inning, the ninth was again offense-fulled. Colorado scored two and pushed their lead to 12-9. Gonzalez, the second man up in the inning, knocked a double and Trevor Story followed him up with a two-run homer.
The Rockies were likely feeling pretty comfortable at that point, but, no. Wade Davis became the latest Colorado pitcher to melt down from the bullpen as of late, giving up four earned runs — including the walkoff single to new father Jose Tevino — as the Rockies lost 13-12.
Jon Gray, the Rockies starter, went 5.0 innings, giving up six hits and six runs. The bullpen gave up seven runs in less than four innings of work.
Colorado lost the series to the Texas Rangers, who are now 15 games under .500.
The Rockies, who were leading the NL West, are now 2-8 in their last 10 games. They’ve fallen to fourth in the NL West at 34-37 and seem to be on a precipice, about to fall even further if they’re not lucky.
Tomorrow, Colorado returns back to the Mile High City to face the New York Mets (30-38) who are similarly struggling, going 3-7 in their last 10. That game’s first pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. MT.
