When the Rockies are rockin’, don’t come a-knockin’.
After losing four straight, Colorado has now won back-to-back games against the Cincinnati Reds, ending the contest Wednesday night victorious, 6-3.
For a second straight night, the Rockies jumped out to the lead early, this night, in the second inning with a double by Tony Wolters to score Ian Desmond. But, the Reds tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning when Jose Peraza singled to score Scooter Gennett.
Then, Cincinnati took the lead in the bottom of the third when Gennett hit a sacrifice fly to send Jesse Winker home; 2-1 Reds. That’s when the Rockies turned it on.
In the top of the fourth, Trevor Story smashed a ground-rule double and Gerardo Parra sent him home on a single to tie the game up 2-2. Then, Ian Desmond — who’s notably struggled all year long — knocked a home run out of the park to give the Rockies a 4-2 lead.
Jon Gray started the game with a 1, 2, 3 first, but was up-and-down all night long. After giving up back-to-back runs in the second and third, he didn’t allow any in the fourth, but then Joey Votto and Gennett doubled in the fifth to bring the game closer, at 4-3 Rockies. He finished pitching five innings, giving up seven hits and three earned runs with five strikeouts.
The next inning, Wolters singled to score Arenado to push the Rockies lead back to two runs, at 5-3 through six. Parra added an insurance run in the top of the eighth by singling and scoring Gonzalez to push it to 6-3 Rockies.
Colorado improved to 32-29 on the season, and they’re now 21-13 on the road this year, which is tied for best in the MLB. They’re now tied for first place in the NL West again. Tomorrow, the Rockies face the Reds at a very early 10:35 a.m. MT.
