According to a team announcement Tuesday, the Colorado Rockies have selected the contract of Yonder Alonso from Triple-A Albuquerque.
Formerly of the Cleveland Indians and most recently, the Chicago White Sox, Alonso will slide into Mark Reynolds’ former role for the club. With Daniel Murphy still on the roster, the veteran figures to receive spot starts and multiple pinch-hitting opportunities in the near future.
For the Isotopes, Alonso hit .419 across nine games and 31 at-bats since signing with a minor league deal with the club July 10th. In that same span, he struck out six times and walked five.
Alonso’s career took it’s most notable turn in 2017. With the Oakland Athletics, the first baseman hit 22 home runs in only 100 games after altering his swing path – a common trend with baseball’s newest home run splurge.
In 2018, Alonso signed with the Indians who utilized him as their first baseman for 138 games, with a single appearance at designated hitter. He hit .250 with 23 long balls in his lone season with the Tribe.
To clear space for Alonso, the Rockies designated Seunghwan Oh for assignment.
Most recently, the club announced that Oh would undergo surgery to clear up his pitching elbow. The operation is expected to end his major league career, with his next opportunity likely coming back in his native South Korea.
For his spot on the 25-man roster, Alonso will replace reliever Yency Almonte who was optioned back to Triple-A.
The youngster will likely stay with the club however and serve as the 26th man for the doubleheader Wednesday against the Washington Nationals.
Alonso will wear No. 13.
