Pick a great storyline from Tuesday’s 11-3 dismantling of the reigning AL Champion Cleveland Indians at the hands of the Colorado Rockies. Do you prefer the rookie starting pitcher who now leads the National League in wins? Or the journeyman first baseman who rejoined the team on a minor-league contract who now leads the NL in RBIs and is second in home runs? Or the Rockies now being 3-1 against participants in last year’s World Series. Because all three stories were a product of Colorado’s win at Coors Field in the two-game series opener.

Rookie right-hander Antonio Senzatela got the Rockies offense going against Mike Clevinger with a two-out, bases-clearing double in the bottom of the second inning. But it was Mark Reynolds‘ night to shine at the plate. Reynolds took over the MLB lead in RBIs (51) with a three-run shot in the fifth and a two-run shot in the seventh. The home runs, Nos. 15 and 16 on the year, move him into second place in the NL. Carlos Gonzalez hit a two-run shot in the third. Charlie Blackmon and Gerardo Parra, who left the game with a quad strain, each had a pair of hits in the win.

Senzatela (8-2, 3.56 ERA) picked up his NL-leading eighth victory with a solid 6.1 innings of work. The 22-year-old allowed three runs on six hits, striking out four and walking one. Senzatela had allowed just three hits through six innings before allowing three in the seventh – a pair of singles sandwiched around a Bradley Zimmer home run. Lonnie Chisenhall had a solo home run off Senzatela in the fifth. Chris Rusin retired two hitters in the seventh inning in relief of Senzatela, then pitched a clean eighth. Rusin lowered his ERA to 2.35 on the year. Mike Dunn worked a 1-2-3 ninth.

With the victory, Colorado is now 3-1 against the participants in the 2016 World Series. The Rockies took two of three games from the Cubs at Coors Field previously this season. The Rockies are currently one game into a six-game stretch against the reigning champs from each respective league. After Wednesday’s afternoon game with Cleveland, Colorado heads to Wrigley Field for a four-game series starting Tuesday.

The Rockies are 37-23, leading the NL West. Another Rockies phenom rookie, Kyle Freeland (6-3, 3.53) starts for Colorado on Wednesday afternoon.
