The Colorado Rockies lost to the Cincinnati Reds Sunday afternoon at Great American Ballpark 3-2 after the bullpen sputtered once again.
The loss marks the end of a season-long 10-game road trip for Colorado. The Rockies posted a 3-7 on the trip and were unable to win a single series.
The Rockies have not won a series since July 12-14 when they won two of three versus the Reds at Coors Field. Additionally, the Rockies have not won a road series since they defeated the San Francisco Giants at the tail end of June.
Ahead are takeaways from the loss.
Jake McGee implodes, again
The Rockies inability to maintain leads and keep games close has crippled them in the second half of the season.
The Rockies woes out of the bullpen continued versus the Reds’. With the game tied at two runs apiece, Manager Bud Blak opted to pull starting pitcher Peter Lambert from the game in favor of relief pitcher Jake McGee.
McGee immediately fell into trouble, walking Josh VanMeter to start the inning and later beaning Jose Iglesias.
With two runners on and one out, McGee surrendered an RBI double to Tucker Barnhart that allowed the Reds to take a 3-2 lead.
McGee was pulled swiftly after surrendering the run, but the necessary damage had already been done en route to another disheartening loss for Colorado.
Lambert deals
Colorado Rockies’ starting pitcher Peter Lambert was on the hill in the clubs series finale versus the Cincinnati Reds.
Lambert has officially etched his spot within in the Rockies rotation, with manager Buddy Black acknowledging his contributions to the club since he was called up from the minor leagues earlier this season while in Cincinnati.
Lambert started off the game by working a flawless first frame; however, the Reds jumped on the youngster in the second inning.
Yasiel Puig grounded out to start the inning. From there, Josh VanMeter poked a single to right field. Scooter Gennett followed with a single of his own, also to right field.
Lambert then managed to get ahead 0-2 versus Jose Iglesias. Iglesias proceeded to hit a single that was jammed on the inside portion of his bat. The ball floated in the air before landing in front of second base, allowing a run to score for the Reds.
Lambert buckled down and was able to record another out. With two down in the inning, Tucker Barnhart hit an RBI single to left field, scoring another run to establish a 2-0 for the Reds.
Lambert settled into a groove on the mound following the hiccups in the second inning. Lambert was sharp, pitching five innings allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four batters.
Yonder Alonso continues to make an impact
The Colorado Rockies signed veteran Yonder Alonso to a contract on July 10 after he was released from the Chicago White Sox.
Alonso spent some time in Triple-A with the Albuquerque Isotopes and was called up to the big league roster on July 23. Alonso thrived with the Isotopes, hitting .419 with seven runs, three doubles and 12 RBI.
Alonso has contributed since being called up to the major league club.
Manager Bud Black has deployed Alonso in the middle of the Rockies’ lineup, and the results have been splendid. Alonso entered Sunday’s matinee having collected four hits in seven at-bat’s so far on the road trip.
Alonso was in the Rockies’ starting lineup in the club’s series finale versus the Reds, batting fourth and playing first base.
Alonso was the Rockies’ lone source of offense as he blasted a two-run home run in the fifth inning.
