The Colorado Rockies and shortstop Trevor Story failed to reach an agreement on a one-year contract for the 2019 season, meaning the 26-year old will likely have an arbitration hearing. According to Jeff Passan, Aaron Nola of the Phillies and Luis Severino of the Yankees also did not reach agreements with their respective clubs and will settle through arbitration.
As noted by Thomas Harding of MLB.com, Story would be just the fifth Rockies player in franchise history to have an arbitration hearing and the first since Wilin Rosario in 2015. Denny Reyes (2002), Sun-Woo Kim (2006) and Brian Fuentes (2008) are the other three players that held arbitration meetings.
In 2018, Story played a huge part in Colorado’s successful campaign through the NL West. The third-year starter had career-high totals for just about every major offensive statistic, including runs (88), hits (174), extra-base hits (85), RBI (108) and stolen bases (27). Story also reduced his strikeout total from 191 in 2017 to 168 in 2018, despite having 95 more at-bats. As a result, Story was named an All-Star and also won the Silver Slugger Award for National League shortstops.
While the Rockies were not able to reach a deal with Story, Chad Bettis, Tyler Anderson and Tony Wolters all agreed to contracts with Colorado on Friday. Second baseman D.J. LeMahieu also agreed to a two-year contract with the New York Yankees, officially ending his time in a Rockies uniform.
