The Colorado Rockies erupted for six runs in the fourth inning, making some history in the process, en route to a 6-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants at Coors Field on Friday. Tyler Chatwood evened his record to 2-2 on the season and Greg Holland earned his ninth save in as many tries in the win.
After Rockies starter Chatwood surrendered three runs in the second inning, Colorado stormed back to take a 6-3 lead after six. Trevor Story hit his first career grand slam and Charlie Blackmon hit an inside-the-park home run off Giants starter Johnny Cueto. It was the first time that such a feat had been accomplished since 2011, and the first time it had happened in the National League since 1950. Coincidentally, it was the Giants, then of New York, that last did it in the senior circuit. The grand slam was the first of Story’s career.
San Francisco chipped away at the lead with a run in the fifth and another in the eighth. Jake McGee came in with two on and one out in the eighth in relief of Adam Ottavino to retire Denard Span and Brandon Belt to preserve the one-run lead. Holland retired the heart of the Giants lineup in order, striking out Brandon Crawford to end the game.
The Rockies continue their three-game series with the Giants on Saturday. Matt Moore (1-2, 4.26) is scheduled to pitch for San Francisco opposite Antonio Senzatela (2-0, 2.37). Although he was not scheduled to pitch in this series, San Francisco will be without ace Madison Bumgarner who was injured in a dirt bike accident in Denver on the Giants’ off day on Thursday. Bumgarner is expected to be out at least 6-8 week.
