With a 4-2 win over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night, the Colorado Rockies completed their second consecutive road sweep to start the 2015 season. The Rockies have surprisingly set a club record by starting the season with six straight wins on the road. It was just the fourth time the Rockies have swept the Giants in San Francisco since AT&T Park opened in 2000.

Only nine games have been played out of a turbulent 162 game season, but the Rockies currently sit alone atop the NL with a 7-2 record.

The Giants, on the other hand, have now lost six straight contests.

Nolan Arenado was the star of the series. Colorado’s gold glove third baseman is celebrating his 24th birthday on Thursday.

In Tuesday night’s 4-1 victory, Arenado made the play of the young MLB season with a fearless catch in foul territory as he slammed full speed into the tarp that was wrapped up against the infield wall. Arenado’s feet were sent straight up in the air by the collision, but he was able to land on the tarp and quickly pop up to his knees to nearly turn the spectacular catch into an unbelievable double play. He led the Rockies to victory again on Wednesday with a three-run bomb in the first inning.

DJ LaMahieu – who has a hit in all nine games this season – went 6-for-10 with one RBI in the series. He produced a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning of Tuesday’s win that scored Corey Dickerson.

“Just trying to set the table for the top of order,” LaMahieu said following the first game of the series. “We’ve got some of the best hitters in the game at the top of that order so I’m just trying to get on base.”

Nick Hundley went 3-for-7 with a run in two starts in San Francisco. The catcher has hits in six of his seven starts with the Rockies.

Colorado’s starters allowed just one run in the series and the club discovered their new closer in right-handed pitcher Adam Ottavino.

Eddie Butler (1-0) got the 2-0 win in the series opener. The righty didn’t allow a run in 5.1 innings despite walking six batters, allowing five hits, and hitting a batter. The bases were loaded in the first and second inning, but Butler was able to pitch out of trouble. He has a 1.64 ERA through two starts despite control issues. The Giants left 12 batters on base in the game.

San Francisco fell to 12-4 in hope openers at AT&T Park with the loss.

“It’s always good to beat the Giants,” Butler said after the win.

Christian Bergman (1-0) started the second game of the series on Tuesday. Colorado had hoped to have Jorge De La Rosa ready to make his season debut in Tuesday’s game, but the club’s top pitcher wasn’t ready to return from his groin strain. Bergman, who made the team as a long reliever, allowed four hits and two walks in four shutout innings.

Scott Oberg (1-0) took the mound in relief of Bergman and registered his first career out with a strikeout. Oberg was eventually credited with the win.

Despite a shaky first inning in which he hit a batter and allowed a run, starter Tyler Matzek (1-0) settled down and delivered a quality start on Wednesday. The lefty allowed one run on five hits and stuck out three batters with one walk in six innings of work.

The Rockies left for San Francisco with huge questions marks at closer after LaTroy Hawkins (1-1) blew two consecutive saves. As a result, manager Walt Weiss elected to remove Hawkins from his closing duties and was rewarded by three terrific performances by Rafael Betancourt and Adam Ottavino.

Betancourt got the call with a 2-0 lead in the first game of the series on Monday. The 39-year-old righty retired the side in order, with two strikeouts, to earn his 75th career save. It was the Venezuelan’s first save opportunity since August of 2013.

Weiss called on Ottavino in the ninth inning with a 4-1 lead on Tuesday and the righty ran away with the closer job by striking out the side in order. It was the first save of the season and second of his career for Ottavino. Weiss named Ottavino the club’s closer following the impressive performance. The 29-year-old retired all three batters he faced again on Wednesday to complete the series sweep.
