The Los Angeles Dodgers put on a laugher Saturday night in Vin Scully’s penultimate broadcast at Dodger Stadium. For his closing number, the boys in blue made the broadcasting legend work a little overtime. Scully had the fortune of calling a classic pitcher’s duel that ended with a walk-off home run for a Dodgers win to clinch a playoff spot as his final goodbye to Chavez Ravine. It was the fifth consecutive win for the Dodgers, including all four against Colorado in the series.
Colorado’s Tyler Anderson battled for 6.1 innings pitched, holding a one-run lead over Brandon McCarthy (who went 5.1 innings) until a Corey Seager triple tied the game. David Dahl hit a go-ahead home run in the ninth inning that looked like it would stand until Seager struck again, this time with a game-tying home run with two out in the ninth. In the 10th inning the Rockies would again retire two batters, but the Dodgers again did their damage with their backs against the wall. Charlie Culberson, a former Rockie, hit a solo shot down the left field line to give Vin Scully one of the most exciting sendoffs possible.
Scully’s final broadcast in his 66-year career will be in San Francisco on Oct. 2. The New York City native will call, on the other side of the country, the team he grew up loving as a child and the team that made him a legend in baseball for his final farewell. Colorado travels to the Bay first for a three-game series against the Giants beginning Tuesday.
