In 2007, the Colorado Rockies finished the regular season by winning 14 of 15 games to leap from fourth place in the NL West into what would eventually become their first and only World Series appearance. Rockies 13, Marlins 0
A sparsely-attended day game at Coors Field saw the beginning of what would eventually be known as ‘Rocktober’ after the Rockies annihilated the visiting Marlins.
Starting pitcher Franklin Morales, called up to the majors less than one month prior, tossed five scoreless innings, striking out five Marlins and walking none. That was more than the Rockies’ offense needed.
Jumping on Florida starter Scott Olsen early, Colorado smacked eight hits and put up six runs before manager Fredi Gonzalez removed him after two innings. Rockies third baseman got things started with a second-inning solo shot to left, and later in the inning — with outfielders Ryan Spilborghs and Jeff Baker on base — catcher Chris Iannetta deposited Olsen’s pitch over the right-field wall and into the Rockies’ bullpen to add three more runs to the scoreboard.
It only got worse from there for the Marlins. Left fielder Matt Holliday and first baseman Todd Helton each hit homers later in the game, and the rout was on.
While the Rockies celebrated their big win, raising their record to 77-72 on the season, little did anybody know that what would happen in the following weeks would soon define their careers — and write an unforgettable chapter in Colorado sports history.
