On Wednesday, James Merilatt noted on Mile High Sports AM 1340 that all of the Broncos running backs can be good in Gary Kubiak’s offense, but only one can be great. Ronnie Hillman joined Gil Whiteley on Thursday following the last official practice of Broncos training camp and said the offense is built to get guys like him downfield.
Hillman was quick to give credit to the offensive line for doing their part in opening up holes for him, something they did extremely well in last week’s preseason opener that saw Hillman run for 66 yards on eight carries, including a long of 23 yards.
The third-year running back entered camp in close competition with Montee Ball for the second-string job behind C.J. Anderson, and says he went into the offseason with a chip on his shoulder – an attitude he’s carrying with him through camp. With his speed and explosiveness, an angry Hillman could rise on the depth chart quickly.
In the interview, Whiteley spoke with Hillman about his other incredibly valuable skill, pass blocking, which admittedly took some time for Hillman to develop.
With three games left on the preseason docket, the No. 1 back job remains in Anderson’s hands, but Hillman is making a strong case for himself with each rep.
