After being drafted by the Denver Broncos in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, wide receiver Courtland Sutton has become the darling of training camp following a series of impressive catches. Sutton joined Eric Goodman of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7 and shared his first impressions of the NFL, and why he believes that a very different sport made him a better football player.
Sutton discussed how facing Denver’s impressive defense in practice everyday has made him better, noting, “It is definitely nice to have such a great defense. Not just the secondary, the linebackers, the D-line; the whole defense makes our offense great.”
The 6’4″ wideout has shown impressive leaping ability and a knack for bringing ball in at its highest point. “When the ball’s in the air, I look at it and say, ‘it’s got to be my ball.’ So I wouldn’t put a percentage on it, but I like to think that if the quarterback takes a chance to throw me the ball in my area — and I’m one-on-one — it’s my job to come down with it,” Sutton said. He went on to note that playing multiple sports, and one in particular, taught him skills that have translated to the football field. “Baseball was my first sport and I think that really helped me a lot, because [when I’m] playing receiver, I am able to track the ball a lot better after playing center field and right field as a kid.”
Sutton made his debut in the Broncos’ preseason opener, but only had one catch for three yards on three targets as quarterbacks Case Keenum and Paxton Lynch struggled against the Minnesota Vikings’ defense in Denver’s 42-28 loss last Saturday.
