Currently sitting at 3-6, the season has not gone to plan for Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph or anyone that supports the team.
Denver has seven games remaining on the schedule, but the Broncos are already essentially out of the playoff race, which has much of the fanbase feeling ready to hit the reset button. The Broncos have not suffered two-straight losing seasons in over four decades, but that streak appears to be quickly coming to an end in 2018.
With so much disappointment surrounding the Broncos this season, it is easy to overlook just how impressive the rookies have been. Led by defensive end Bradley Chubb and running back Phillip Lindsay, the organization is already greatly benefiting from the play of its young stars.
Four of Denver’s first-year players were named to PFF’s Midseason All-Rookie Team, including Chubb, Lindsay, Josey Jewell and Courtland Sutton.
Chubb, 22, has eight sacks in nine games, and appears to be getting stronger by the week. In Sunday’s loss to the Texans, Chubb had a season-high six tackles. And over the last four games, Chubb has racked up eight tackles for loss and seven hits on opposing quarterbacks.
With the future uncertain for many of Denver’s defensive players, having a pair of elite edge rushers like Chubb and Von Miller, gives the Broncos a foundation to build around.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Broncos have seen multiple young guys flourish, but nobody has stood out more than running back Phillip Lindsay.
After going undrafted last spring, Lindsay has outplayed every other rookie running back in the league. Through the first nine games of his young career, Lindsay has 591 rushing yards and is averaging 5.4 yards per carry, both of which rank in the top-10 in the NFL.
Sutton has not been featured in the offense quite as much Lindsay, but the 23-year old wide receiver out of SMU, has been able to produce when his number has been called. Sutton has had at least 50 receiving yards in four of the last six games, and as he continues to improve as a route runner, the young wide receiver should only expect his role to increase.
