The Pro Football Hall of Fame can be a sore subject for Broncos fans. While the team has been to a record-tying eight Super Bowls, only four players represent the Broncos in Canton. Two other teams with eight appearances, the Cowboys and Steelers have 15 and 21 players enshrined respectively. Even worse, the Chiefs, Chargers and Raiders all have more than the Broncos.
Furthermore, the organization does not have a single defensive player in the Hall. Former media relations director and Broncos guru Jim Saccomano joined Gil Whitely to discuss which members of the Orange Crush deserve gold jackets.
“We have about five guys that should be in the Hall of Fame,” Saccomano said.
One name discussed was Steve Atwater.
“He had maybe the best game by a safety in Super Bowl history and should be in the Hall,” according the Saccomano.
Another player annually snubbed is Randy Gradishar. In his nine-year career with the Broncos he was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, five-time First-team All-Pro and the 1978 Defensive Player of the Year.
Gradishar has now moved on to the Veterans Committee. A smaller number of voters may help him pass the final hump to get into the Hall of Fame.
Louis Wright is another player Saccomano argues deserves to be enshrined. Like Gradishar, Wright was a defensive stud who spent his entire career with the Broncos, Wright may have played too long ago to be valued by current voters. “Lou-dini” is one of only a few members of the 1970’s All-Decade team that is not in the Hall of Fame.
