We learned yesterday that Von Miller does not plan on being at the Denver Broncos’ offseason workouts which begin next week, and in reality, that’s totally fine. Until mandatory minicamp begins on June 7, everything the Broncos do this offseason is voluntary, meaning Miller didn’t have to be there anyways.
For a handful of players, though, Denver’s offseason workouts are anything but voluntary — at least, if they want to add a few hundred thousand dollars to their bank account.
According to Mike Klis of 9News, there are six Denver Broncos who will earn workout bonuses by attending 90 percent of the team’s offseason workouts:
Russell Okung, LT — $1 million
Jared Crick, DE — $250,000
C.J. Anderson, RB — $100,000
Chris Harris Jr., CB — $100,000
Derek Wolfe, DE — $50,000
Jordan Norwood, WR — $30,000
That’s a lot of cash for simply showing up …
Phase I of the Broncos offseason workout program will begin this week, and will mostly consist of a strength-and-conditioning regimen; no on-field coaching will be allowed.
The day after the draft, May 2, Phase II of the Broncos offseason workout program will begin, allowing coaches to work individually with their players and conduct team drills; no offense vs. defense sessions, though.
A few weeks later, Organized Team Activities (OTAs) will begin on May 24 and continue through June 16. OTAs are voluntary, except for mandatory minicamp, which will take place from June 7 – 9.
For the most part, even while most everything is voluntary, we should expect to see the majority of Broncos players participating in these offseason workouts — with the exception of Miller, of course — especially with the thoughts of repeating as champions on their mind.
