Picks for Oklahoma-Alabama

Obviously, there are some great sporting events on TV tonight, none bigger than the first matchup of the 2025 College Football Playoff. Here’s a look at some of our favorite picks for tonight’s game.

Germie Bernard, Alabama Crimson Tide WR: More 2.5 rushing yards Bernard is a receiver, but he does have 17 rush attempts this season. With how much Alabama has struggled to run the ball this year — particularly in recent weeks — I think Kalen DeBoer and Ryan Grubb will think outside the box as they design a running game for this matchup against Oklahoma. That could mean giving Bernard some chances to make plays out of the backfield. He has cleared this projection in 6 of 12 games this season. Bernard didn’t have a rush attempt when these teams met in Tuscaloosa earlier this year, but I don’t think that precludes Bernard from getting a carry or 2 in this game. Ty Simpson, Alabama Crimson Tide QB: More 1.5 passing TDs Simpson performed well in the first matchup against the Sooners, which means he’ll have some tape to study to better prepare for an even better outing this time around. He threw for well over 300 yards with 1 touchdown, and I bet he’ll be able to find Ryan Williams and Co. in the end zone a few times this go around. John Mateer, Oklahoma Sooners QB: Less 1.5 passing TDs Mateer didn’t exactly show out last time against a good Alabama defense, throwing for just 138 yards and no touchdowns. Instead, Oklahoma’s defense made some huge plays to help secure the Sooners their biggest win of the season. For another, the Oklahoma offense has just really, really struggled across the past few weeks. Mateer has not been the same since injuring his hand, and it’s not hard to see him having a rough outing this time around with all the pressure on the former Washington State QB.
