Day two of joint practice has come to an end for the Denver Broncos and the San Francisco 49ers, and if the Broncos can play the 49ers the next 20-22 weeks, we’ll be celebrating back-to-back Super Bowl championships in February of 2017!
Coming into the week, it was no secret that the defending champs would dominate, and that’s exactly what happened.
To end day one, the Broncos finished with three straight interceptions from Lorenzo Doss, Justin Simmons and Kayvon Webster. The defensive line also did their part, racking up what would have been about five sacks — you know, if they still allowed people to tackle quarterbacks at football practice.
So the defense did their part, and it looks like they’re going to pick up right where they left off last February, which had me thinking: Can this defense carry the team throughout the season? Because they’ll have to at times, and they’re more than capable of doing so.
Von Miller, who has been eased in to camp after missing OTA’s due to his contract negotiations and world tour, will play a big role in that. And after receiving plenty of reps over the last two days, he is expected to start in Saturday’s preseason game, as will defensive end Derek Wolfe, who left practice this week with an injured ankle.
Day two of joint practices didn’t have as much to offer, though. In fact, the 49ers came out for a good stretch, about 45 minutes of team drills and then called it a day. I would assume that the four or five scuffles in Wednesday’s practice had something to do with the teams taking it easy on Thursday.
I did catch up with Blaine Gabbert after the 49ers wrapped up their day and asked what he thought about the defending Super Bowl champs.
“They’re a great team and great way to measure where we are,” Gabbert said. “I think we matched up pretty well.”
Well, Blaine, thank you for the conversation today, but you’re wrong here. Not only did the Broncos dominate against San Francisco, but they made the 49ers look like a minor league team playing against a big league ball club.
Saturday night should be another dominating performance for the Broncos and their great defense. Will they pitch another shutout? It’s certainly possible. Eric Branch from the San Francisco Chronicle, who’s in town for the game, told me on Thursday that if this team is .500 on the year, Chip Kelly deserves to win Coach of the Year.
