Jeff Heuerman was selected by the Denver Broncos in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft, but injuries have kept him from living up to expectations over his career. Now healthy, Heuerman has the opportunity to play a big role in an offense led by Case Keenum.
Speaking to Eric Goodman & Les Shapiro of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7, Heuerman talked about his health, his potential impact on the offense, and some of his teammates – including fellow tight end Jake Butt.
“The biggest thing is staying healthy,” said Heuerman. “Day in and day out; staying out there on the field and competing. Really, just grinding. The worst part about being out in training camp is the team and everybody is out there just grinding, and it being so difficult and so tough, and the day is so long – and you just feel terrible because you’re not out there going through it all.”
Heuerman had two big catches for the Broncos on Saturday during their preseason game against the Bears (2 receptions for 21 Yds), and Shapiro mentions that this could be Heuerman’s breakout year — but the Ohio State product gave an interesting response.
“I was taught at a young age keep your mouth shut – work your ass off and good things will happen to you,” Heuerman continued. “That’s what I’ve always done. I come in every single day and give it everything I’ve got. That’s how I approach everything.”
The Broncos have a young, promising group of tight ends and Heuerman is excited to work with Butt in the offense.
“I think him [Butt] and I work really well together,” said Heuerman. “Some of the packages that they’ll have for us… I think it’ll be really special.”
