Over his five-year career with the Denver Broncos, Todd Davis has gone from situational player to season-long captain.
Since the 2016 season kicked off, Davis has started 21 games for the orange and blue as one of Denver’ most important players, at inside linebacker next to Brandon Marshall.
On Thursday, Davis joined joined Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro on Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7 to discuss the upcoming challenge against the Baltimore Ravens, playing on the road and the team’s potential.
“We haven’t even played our best football yet,” the captain linebacker said. “We were able to get those two wins just by hard work and determination. If we’re able to play our best football for four quarters, we’ll really be able to dominate people.”
Strong words from a crucial cog to the machine that is one of the best defenses in the NFL. In the Broncos two, fourth-quarter comeback wins, they’ve defeated their opponents by a combined eight points. And while the defense played well for most of those games — outside of allowing tight ends and receivers to rack up huge catches — the offense was inept for stretches of each contest.
So, maybe Davis is right; this team could possibly dominate opponents if they can find a way to make everything work well together.
Moving onto this week, the linebacker knows not to underestimate the playmaking abilities of Super Bowl champion quarterback Joe Flacco.
“I think Flacco’s a really great quarterback,” Davis said of the upcoming opponent. “A veteran quarterback. I think his great ability is be able to scramble and look to throw. He’s not scrambling to run. He’s scrambling to get a big play and really make some things happen.”
It sounds like someone’s been watching film on the Ravens. That’s a good note; when Flacco breaks out of the pocket, he’s not much a threat to tuck the ball and run, so Broncos defenders will have to stay under control and focus on sticking with their players.
Denver is 2-0 to start the season, but both games have come in the friendly confines of Mile High Stadium. What’s it going to be like to play on the road this week for the first time this year?
“I think it’s a big test for us, and I think it’ll be a good one,” Davis said of playing on the east coast. “We’ve got a good team in Baltimore that we’re going to face this weekend, and going on the road is always fun for me. I love being in another atmosphere, seeing how another team’s fans are.
“And when we get to that point and we can quiet them down, that’s what’s really fun for me,” Davis continued.
