Jamal Murray came into Summer League with a ton of expectations surrounding him. As the seventh overall pick, he was expected to show off the talents that had many calling him the best scorer in the draft.
Through two games, though, we weren’t seeing it.
“The first couple games I was just trying to get used to my teammates, the speed,” Murray told Gil Whiteley on Mile High Sports Radio. “It was my first Summer League, so I just wanted to see how things were going to go; I kind of played laid back, a little bit.”
Averaging 10 points on 30 percent shooting, Murray looked lost. He had just as many turnovers as assists, and the elite three-point shooting he’d been praised for was missing entirely.
Once things clicked, though, it was a different story.
Through the final three games, he averaged 26 points and proved that he can score in just about any way imaginable. But it was in the pick and role where he looked the most impressive.
“Coach wants me to be a playmaking scorer and kind of be able to do both,” Murray said in reference to playing the one and the two. “Make plays, put the ball in the hoop and defend.”
