When Gary Kubiak named Trevor Siemian and Mark Sanchez as co-starters last week, the assumption was that one would start Week 1 of the preseason and the other would start Week 2. After Sanchez lined up behind center for the first snap against the Bears, Siemian looks to be in line to do the same against the 49ers on Saturday.
But if you’re expecting confirmation from Siemian, you’ve come to the wrong place.
“I’ve done it once or twice so far,” Siemian said of skirting the question about starting while talking with Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro of Afternoon Drive. “We call that an olé.”
Still, the rest of the football world seems to think Siemian will get the nod this weekend. Even the New York Times wants to talk to him, and as Shapiro pointed out, the New York Times doesn’t normally talk to backups.
Siemian, though, wouldn’t budge.
“Yeah, it’s been fun,” Siemian said of the attention. “For another olé, it’s been a great camp for us. Going into the second preseason game, we’re getting into playing a little longer and making the most of our reps. I think it’s been a good camp so far.”
Whatever happens, Siemian has proven himself this offseason, and he’s done so by focusing on himself, not what the outsiders have to say or think.
“I think I’ve tried to do a good job of just improving myself everyday and seeing where that takes me,” Siemian said. “You know, right now it’s put me in this position, and that’s kind of the mindset I’m going to go forward with, regardless of what happens. Whether I end up starting or not, there’s a lot of room to grow in this game, and I couldn’t be in a better place to do it.”
