Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story had himself a weekend. Over three games, Story popped four more home runs, bringing his season total to 27 and setting a new National League record for most home runs by a rookie shortstop.
It’s been a pretty remarkable ride for Story, though somehow it’s gone relatively under the radar, at least nationally — despite leading the NL in home runs, he didn’t get the love required to earn a spot on the All-Star team.
And as always, you can trace the lack of respect back to the biased view of Coors Field.
The fact, though, is that this is not a Coors-Field fluke. Story has hit 11 of his home runs on the road. Trevor is three home runs shy of tying the MLB shortstop rookie season record set by Nomar Garciaparra, with 64 games left to play. Say what you want about Story striking out, but his power is for real.
Denver and the surrounding areas should truly take a second and really appreciate what is going on. Story is having one of the best rookie seasons Denver has ever seen. Story is in a select class of Denver rookies such as Terrell Davis in 1995, Carmelo Anthony in 2003 and Nathan MacKinnon in 2013.
It has been an incredible season for Story and it seems as if his rookie campaign is still not getting the proper respect that it deserves. Story should be compared to great Denver rookies before him.
The Rockies have been known to produce players that have large impacts during their rookie seasons. Players like Todd Helton, Troy Tulowitzki and Nolan Arenado have all had stellar rookie seasons in the past. There is just something different about Story, and his ability to hit for power. Just when Trevor becomes an afterthought, he seems to explode once again to remind fans what he did during the first six games of the season.
The MLB record book has been rewritten a few times this year thanks to Story. As Colorado sports fans, we should not take this type of stuff for granted because it is doubtful that we are ever going to see this type of rookie season again.
