Trevor Story is becoming the story for the Colorado Rockies this year.
Shortstop Story was named to the 2018 MLB All-Star Game on Sunday, July 8, his first selection as a professional baseball player.
All year long, he’s been dominant from the plate, enjoying a career year in 2018 — .286 BA, 17 HR, 62 RBI, 11 SB — and currently leads all NL shortstops in HRs, RBIs, SLG% and XBHs.
Speaking to Eric Goodman of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7, Story says that baseball is a long season and that every player is going to have their own ups and downs.
“Hitting’s weird man,” said Story. “You can feel really good and feel really bad. But it’s a long season for a reason. Just sticking to it. You’re going to have your ups and downs. I feel like I’ve found a way to minimize the long stretches of bad.”
Story’s adjustments at the plate in 2018 have paid dividends for him as his batting average has jumped from a .239 in 2017 to a .286 this season.
“I really just try to watch my effort level a lot,” Story continued. “I don’t really need to swing my hardest to hit the ball hard. That’s one thing that I have learned, and really, just controlling my effort level has been big.”
Becoming an elite hitter at the plate comes with experience, and Story believes that his participation in the big leagues so far has helped him have a career year.
“I think you kind of need to realize that the pressure is on the pitcher,” Story explained. “That’s kind of the mindset that I’ve had. I’m just not trying to do too much. I don’t need to try to hit home runs to hit home runs.”
Without a doubt, the All-Star Game is one of the most exciting events for players and fans across Major League Baseball, and Story is pumped to be a part of it.
“There’s so many great players that are going to be there,” Story said. “It’s going to be fun to be around those guys.
When asked on who he is the most excited to converse with at the All-Star Game, Story gave an interesting response.
“There’s a couple that comes to mind for sure,” Story continued. “[Brandon] Crawford, I want to talk to him about his defense and his routine and all of that. Because he’s one of the guys that I look up to now. Obviously [Mike] Trout. I’d love to talk to him. I’d like to talk to Mookie [Betts] too.”
