Tyler Chatwood was one of the most dominant pitchers on the road in 2016. His 1.69 road ERA was second-best in baseball among pitchers with at least 40 innings pitched. Yet Chatwood says he still gets nervous before starts, even in Spring Training.
“I was nervous today just like would be for a regular start,” Chatwood said on Wednesday after his first Cactus League start of 2017. “I have my routine that I go through; I was a little rusty, it being my first start in a while. But I was really nervous getting out there and just getting the juices flowing again.”
That nervous energy is not necessarily a bad thing, according to Chatwood, who allowed one run on two hits in two innings pitched.
“I think you need that feeling. So I enjoy that part of it. And just being able to get out there and compete against another team is pretty fun,” Chatwood said.
Colorado went on to win the game 3-1 over San Diego.
