Tyler Chatwood dazzled on Saturday afternoon at AT&T Park as the Colorado Rockies defeated the San Francisco Giants 5-0. Chatwood needed only 105 pitches to throw a two-hit complete-game shutout. It was the first nine-inning complete game of Chatwood’s career. He was perfect through 5.2 innings.
Chatwood struck out four and forced 17 ground ball outs to earn his first victory of 2017. He lowered his season ERA to 3.54 over three starts and 20.1 innings. The 27-year-old right-hander faced only 30 batters in the game, allowing two hits and a walk. He became the seventh Rockies pitcher to throw a complete game shutout and allow two hits or less. Chatwood previously had an eight-inning complete game in a loss to the Dodgers in June 2013.
Mark Reynolds had two hits and scored twice to lead the Rockies offense. Charlie Blackmon drove in a pair, and Nolan Arenado hit his fourth home-run of the season in the third off Matt Moore. Arenado was a triple shy of the cycle. Four of Colorado’s five RBIs came with two outs.
With the win, Colorado is ensured at least a split in the four-game series with San Francisco. The series finale on Sunday will be the 14th day in a row the Rockies have played, dating all the way back to Opening Day, April 3. Colorado will earn two well-derved days off, Monday and Thursday, surrounding a pair of games with the Dodgers in L.A. Antonio Senzatela (1-0, 1.50) will try and win the series for Colorado on Sunday, while Jeff Samardzija (0-2, 6.75) will work for the split for San Francisco. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. MDT.
