Mudiay and the Nuggets were eliminated from playoff contention with a 101-95 loss in New Orleans on Thursday. It was a disappointing outcome for Michael Malone’s team, as the Pelicans roster is mostly made up of recent D-League call-ups. New Orleans is still yet to crack the 30-win plateau on the season.
Mudiay was 5-of-12 from the floor for 13 points and did not make it to the free throw line on the night.
The loss was especially disappointing considering Denver had just won in Memphis the night prior against a Grizzlies team that currently holds the No. 5 seed in the Western Conference.
At 32 wins, Denver is already guaranteed to improve on last year’s 30-52 record, but they have just five more games to reach the 36 wins from two years ago. Four of the five teams remaining on the schedule are playoff teams at present, and the fifth game – Saturday’s home contest with Sacramento – is against former head coach George Karl, who is undefeated against Denver in two tries this year.
After that Denver faces Oklahoma City, San Antonio then Utah, the No. 3, 2 and 8 seeds, respectively, at home before closing out the season against No. 6 Portland on the road in the season finale.
The final stretch will be a tough one for the Nuggets, but at least Mudiay will be walking it in style with his new shoes.
