While Aspen resident Tejay Van Garderen has been riding a great Tour de France to this point, Stage 10 on Tuesday proved that everybody is playing second fiddle to Briton Chris Froome of Team Sky.

Coming into the 167 km Stage 10 after a rest day, Froome had a 12 second advantage over Van Garderen but everything changed on Tuesday. In the second Pyrenean stage, Froome broke away with 6.4 km to go and was not caught.

Froome asserted his dominance further on this Tour de France with his 5th stage win.

Letour.com summarized Froome’s glory run:

Chris Froome is as strong as a lion (nguwu kama samba in Swahili, the language he learnt in his native Kenya). He stormed to victory at La Pierre-Saint-Martin, the first summit of the Tour de France. Not only did he claim his fifth stage victory at the Tour de France but his lieutenant Richie Porte made the double for Team Sky, allowing the duo to start the second Pyrenean stage with the yellow and the polka dot jersey respectively. Froome has literally outclassed Nairo Quintana, Tejay van Garderen, Alberto Contador and Vincenzo Nibali.

For all of Van Garderen’s efforts he now sits 2 minutes and 52 seconds behind Froome. Amazingly, this is still good enough for second place.

Here is the new top 10 ranking:

With still half the Tour de France to go and with the plenty of mountain stages remaining, Froome does not have the race completely secured, but it is going to take a remarkable performance from another rider to knock him of his perch.
