Since being selected in the second round of April’s NFL Draft, Broncos fans have been clamoring for Drew Lock to start. An injury sidelined him at the start of the season and now fans may have to wait even longer.
“I don’t think it’s vitally important,” Vic Fangio said when asked about the importance of Lock seeing playing time this season.
The Broncos head coach cited an experience with the Saints from early in his career. “We played a young quarterback in New Orleans for about three games, and he did pretty damn good,” he said. “We took the attitude — the franchise — that well, we got this guy that played pretty good for three games. Well, it didn’t work out that way.
“So, I think with a young guy in limited reps it can be good — you can get a false positive, you can get a false negative. You know you need a whole body of work, and that body of work includes offseason, training camp, build-up.”
Many believe that Fangio is correct.
Whether or not Drew Lock is the quarterback of the future for the Broncos may not be fully assessed after just a few games in 2019. It may take a much longer stretch of time and play on the field to determine the answer.
On the contrary, there are those that believe getting a chance to learn what this team has in Lock means he should start as soon as possible. Even in a short stretch of games, strengths and weaknesses may be found that the team can work on with the young quarterback during the final weeks of the regular season and into the off season. Gaining some knowledge would be better than none. If he does play, the Broncos do not plan to hold Lock back.
“I’m not putting any limits on him if he does get in there, but I would be reluctant to make final conclusions,” said Fangio.
The Broncos return to action this Sunday against the Bills in Buffalo. Kick off is set for 11:00am M.T.
