No one likes to be the I-told-you-so guy.
But, a little less than a month ago, I offered some savvy advice.
Hopefully you listened.
In a list of silly Broncos prop bets for the 2016 season, I suggested taking a flyer on Von Miller at 200-1 to win NFL MVP.
The rationale was as follows:
Yes, a defender hasn’t won the award since Lawrence Taylor did it for the Giants in 1986, but you’d be crazy to assume Von Miller can’t do it this year.
Just look at the way Miller found a new level in the playoffs against Tom Brady and Cam Newton – arguably the game’s two best quarterbacks.
Miller got paid massive money this offseason and looks poised to have a monster season.
It would probably take breaking Michael Strahan’s sack record (22.5 in 2001) and a ton of forced turnovers, but at 200-1, it’s tempting.
Here’s the bad news: A quick peek at the odds today shows Miller is down to 50-1 after a hot start in which he’s totaled four sacks and a forced fumble.
Here’s the good news: Two games into the NFL season, Von Miller is the league’s MVP.
He’s only got 14 more games to keep it that way.
You can make a case for DeAngelo Williams running wild in Pittsburgh, or Stefon Diggs coming out of nowhere in Minnesota, but no one has proved more valuable thus far than the Super Bowl 50 MVP.
His sack of Cam Newton in Week 1 to force a long fourth down for the Panthers with time ticking down should have essentially ended the game. A silly penalty against Chris Harris Jr. the next play extended it, but Miller’s sack of Newton for a loss of six on third-and-15 proved to be a big loss of yards.
The Broncos needed to make that kick just long enough for Graham Gano to overthink it; sure enough, Miller and the rest of the defense did as Gano pulled it left from 50 yards away.
Then, this past Sunday with Denver clinging to a 26-20 lead and Andrew Luck hoping to drive down and steal a win, Miller delivered with a patented strip sack. Shane Ray scooped and scored and it was the game sealing play in a 34-20 win – a result that doesn’t properly indicate what a battle it was.
Of course guys like Newton and Ben Roethlisberger are still favorites to take home the hardware (both are 3-1), but that’s because offensive players always win the award.
Maybe 2016 is when that 30-year-old trend breaks.
A quick look at the history books shows Miller is off to his fastest start ever in his NFL career. And that Strahan’s record could be in sight.
In 2011, Miller got his fourth sack in Week 4. In 2012, the year he finished with 18.5 sacks, it came in Week 5. In 2013, he was suspended the first six games and his fourth sack didn’t come until his fifth week back. In 2014, it was again Week 4 and in 2015 Miller waited until Week 8 to notch sack No. 4.
Miller usually finishes fast, but doesn’t necessarily start off hot. These first two weeks could be gravy when it comes to the final sack total.
From a sheer mathematical standpoint (small sample size, yes), Miller’s on pace for 32 sacks. That’s an average of two per game, but even notching 1.5 per contest would still easily secure him the record with 25 total. Account for the fact he’ll have a couple of down games, but also likely a couple more huge games, and 22.5 feels like it’s really in play.
It’s unclear if Strahan pops champagne at the end of every regular season when someone doesn’t break his record, but he shouldn’t even consider buying the bubbly, or even the ice, right now.
As I noted on August 23, breaking the record is probably the only way Miller does enough to have a fighting chance of winning the award. The Broncos going 12-4 or 13-3 on the backs of their defense, specifically Miller’s, wouldn’t hurt either.
Maybe you’re the one who listened a month ago.
Maybe you’re the one who’s listening now.
No one likes to be the I-told-you-so guy, but two weeks in Miller looks like an MVP-caliber player.
I may end up just being the messenger.
