Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller stands on the precipice of what could be a nine-figure payday following a successful 2015 campaign. Based on the standard set by Kansas City and Justin Houston, Miller could be looking at the largest payday for a defensive player ever. But that doesn’t mean he’s on pace to be the best ever, or even the best Bronco ever.

Broncos Ring of Fame linebacker Karl Mecklenburg joined Eric Goodman and Zach Fogg on Mile High Sports AM 1340, saying he believes this will be a very fun defense to watch at work because of the depth at linebacker, not just because of Von Miller. And while Mecklenburg played with some exceptional talent in his day, and sees great talent with the current bunch, he says no Broncos defense has yet matched the Orange Crush. This year’s defense has the chance, he believes, but they must improve at turning the ball over and making big stops at the end of games.

When asked if Miller could be the best Broncos defender in history, Mecklenburg believes he has the talent, but needs to stay healthy. “He’s yet to play a whole season,” Mecklenburg pointed out. “I missed five games in 12 years… Yes, he is as gifted as any player I have ever seen… but you have to stay on the field.”

This year, Miller appears to be in top form and healthy as ever. 2015 could be the year where Miller not only gets paid, but he finally turns the corner on his injuries as well.

Mecklenburg also addressed the offensive line situation, a pressing issue in any Broncos preseason conversation. The longtime Bronco said he’s glad this is a young group and that he saw some very good things in their first game. He believes they will be a much more aggressive group than people are giving them credit. 

Additionally, Mecklenburg discussed the NFL concussion protocol and medical practices, a subject brought back to attention on Wednesday following a big hit by Danny Trevathan on C.J. Anderson.
