Rams’ defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is excited to work with new additions Aqib Talib and Ndamukong Suh in the upcoming season, and is equally excited about the future of the Rams’ organization.
Speaking with Gil Whiteley and Mark Jackson of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7, Phillip is excited to be reunited with Talib, and is well aware of what he can contribute to the team.
“Obviously, I know Aqib real well, and it’s been great to be back with him, and he’s a big help,” Phillips said. “I mean he’s a leader, so that helps, and I’ve been able to be around a lot of great players, and most of them have a great passion for the game, and that’s what I’m excited about. You kind of click into that passion and say, ‘this is what we need to do’, and they do it, so I’m looking forward to it,”
Phillips is also looking forward to see what Suh and Aaron Donald will do on the defensive line. Thanks in part to Donald’s leadership, the Rams were able to improve tremendously from past seasons, and Phillips is hoping to keep the good play going.
“You know take a team that hadn’t won; none of these guys had ever had a winning season, so that was an exciting part of the year… to win the division that Seattle had been dominating and to win 11 games was a lot of fun for us and for me to just be around it. To see guys get that light in their eyes that they hadn’t seen before, and Aaron was certainly a leader of that on defense,” Phillips said.
Phillips has been coaching for a very long time, but he still has a passion for it, and the players only contribute to his love for the game.
“Well I love football, you know. I mean, certainly in my case it’s been my life; my dad coached, and I always loved that, so I saw him enjoy football as a coach, so I tried to follow that path, and every year’s fun for me. The players keep me young, and I enjoy the game itself, the competition I guess and the camaraderie are really important, so I enjoy all that,” Phillips said.
