There are few more beloved personalities in the history of Broncos Country than that of former Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. He also has seen Tony Romo, who in recent times has often been linked to the Denver Broncos, up close when he was head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. On Thursday, Phillips joined Gil Whiteley on Mile High Sports Radio and discussed the Cowboys quarterback.
“He’s not a free agent yet, so I don’t know that teams can comment on him; but he’s a great guy and a good leader and a winner, in my opinion,” Phillips said.
As is the case in most people’s assessment of Romo, Phillips’ concerns seem to center around his ability to stay healthy. more than his performance on the field.
“I coached Tony obviously. The only time we lost any games was when he was hurt,” Phillips said. “He’s a strong guy, but unfortunately, he’s had some injuries.”
That being said, Phillips feels Romo still has something to offer. Not just on the field, but in the locker room as well.
“I believe in Tony. He’s the right kind of guy as far as leadership [goes] and especially talent. Tony’s very talented. The only problems he’s had is when he’s been hurt and been out of there. We won a lot of games when I coached him, and he’s won a lot since then. And he’s got a high quarterback rating overall, which, I don’t know how much that means, but I think it means quite a bit.”
