If something works once, why not try it again? That’s apparently the mindset several want-to-be NFL players have taken over the last few months, and Wade Phillips is sick of it.
If you remember, earlier this season, Shiloh Keo asked the Broncos defensive coordinator for a job on Twitter, and a week later, that’s exactly what he got. According to Phillips, though, that was just the start.
“No. In fact, if people would quit Twittering me now to try to get on the team, I would appreciate it,” Phillips said at Super Bowl Opening Night on Monday, via Tom Pelissero of USA TODAY Sports. “I’ve had tons of people saying, ‘Hey, I played in junior high and I know I can help you.”
What they don’t realize is that Keo and Phillips actually had a previous connection; Phillips didn’t actually just sign some random guy off Twitter.
Keo was a member of the Houston Texans for three seasons under Phillips, and there’s a good chance that Keo was already on the forefront of Phillips’ mind when the Broncos safeties started to fall to the wayside with injuries.
And Phillips says that none of the guys contacting him have even been close to qualified.
“No,” Phillips said. “I haven’t come up with any yet that even played football.”
Well, it was worth a shot.
