The Colorado Eagles are now just two wins away from claiming the franchise’s first-ever Kelly Cup thanks to a pair of power play goals on Sunday night. Colorado took the second game of the best-of-seven series with the South Carolina Stingrays, 3-2. Colorado now has a week to sit on its 2-0 series lead before things resume in Charleston.
South Carolina got on the board first in Loveland on Sunday when Steven McParland knocked home a rebound in the first period. Colorado’s Matt Garbowsky, one of the heroes from Game 1, would level the score on the power play 3:34 into the second. Eagles defenseman Sean Zimmerman kept up the pressure with another score just over a minute later. The Stingrays weren’t going away without a fight though. With under a minute remaining in the second, Steve Weinstein found the back of the net after a scrum sent Eagles goaltender Lukas Hafner to the ice.
The two sides skated through half of the final frame before Colorado took advantage of another power play. This time it was rookie forward Shawn St-Amant who would deliver for the Eagles. It was St-Amant’s fifth goal of the playoffs. He also had an assist in the win. Hafner made 25 saves to earn the victory in net.
The Eagles and Stingrays now have a full week to prepare for Game 3. The two teams will travel to Charleston to square off on Sunday, June 4. There will be no rest between Games 3 and 4, however. Colorado has the opportunity to clinch its first ever Kelly Cup on Monday, June 5. Game 5, if necessary, would be Wednesday the 7th in Charleston.
