Colin Kaepernick’s decision to sit out the National Anthem has sparked a conversation that doesn’t appear to be slowing anytime soon, and a large reason why is because of guys like Brandon Marshall, who have joined in Kaepernick’s protest.

And, as with most acts of protest, Marshall has received his fair share of backlash, including the burning of a Marshall jersey outside the Broncos training facility on Monday morning.

Marshall, though, understands the repercussions of his actions — he even lost one of his endorsements — and has taken the backlash in stride, even posting this photo over the weekend on his Instagram account.

Just like with Kaepernick, whether you agree with Marshall or not, it’s difficult to deny that the protest hasn’t sparked debate across the country.

If you’re going to burn a jersey, though, you probably don’t want to burn a $200 authentic jersey; a $5 shirt from Walmart and a sharpie gets the same message across.

(Update) Following practice, Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro of the Afternoon Drive spoke to Brandon Marshall about the video, and he said he wasn’t fazed by it.

“It doesn’t bother me at all, actually,” Marshall said on Afternoon Drive on Mile High Sports Radio. “It is what it is. He can burn my jersey, but it’s not really hurting at all.”

The jersey, though, is just the start. Marshall has already lost two sponsorships and has endured a barrage of angry responses on social media. He, though, expected as much.

“Yeah, I just didn’t know to what level, to what extent,” Marshall said of whether he expected the backlash. “But it’s kind of crazy to me, because everyone that I talk to that are in the military — I know a lot of vets — people that I’ve seen comment on the situation, they all support me. It’s just everybody else that doesn’t support me, the people that aren’t in the military, they don’t support me. But all the people in the military, they do support me. You’d think it would be the other way around, but it is what it is.”
