Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak was very quick on Monday to shoot down any idea that he’s considering a change at quarterback. He was asked whether Paxton Lynch would be an option if the Broncos continue to struggle as they did against Oakland.
Trevor Siemian was 18 for 37 with two touchdowns and interception in a 30-20 loss on Sunday, but as 120 Sports put it, “he was not good. Siemian threw balls that we were, the I mean broadcast was, baffled … In some of these situations he was throwing them into dirt.”
Still, Kubiak believes in the quarterback that has his team at 6-3 (1-2 AFC West) and still in the playoff picture. The team gave Siemian their vote of confidence last week, naming him a second-half captain by team vote.
Despite the confidence boost, Siemian’s offense floundered against Oakland. They did not convert a first down until the 10:13 mark in the second quarter. Denver went three-and-out on their first four possessions, gaining just nine total yards.
120 Sports thinks Kubiak needs to step up himself, “talk to his quarterback and say, ‘listen, we need to do a much better job and it starts with our quarterback.'”
“I’m he is in the meeting room,” Morning Run co-host Michael Kim says. “Certainly Trevor Siemian knows that he can play better, and needs to play better. But at the same time, I think that Kubiak doesn’t want to crush the confidence of a young quarterback.”
The Broncos will try to regain some of that confidence Sunday in New Orleans when they travel to face the 4-4 Saints. New Orleans beat San Francisco 41-23 last week.
