Rookie Jon Gray set multiple records on Saturday night at Coors Field, striking out 16 San Diego Padres in a complete game shutout. The 16 strikeouts were a Rockies franchise record, breaking the mark set by Darryl Kile (14) in 1998. It was also a Coors Field record, besting Randy Johnson (14).
Just as impressive as the 16 strikeouts was Gray’s zero walks and four hits allowed. Gray needed 113 pitches to earn his 10th win of the season (and his career), 78 of those pitches went for strikes.
On offense, Colorado gave Gray a four-run lead in the bottom of the first inning. Nolan Arenado and Tom Murphy both homered in the inning. Murphy hit another in the fifth. DJ LeMahieu went 1-for-3 with a walk and took over the NL batting lead in the process. Colorado wraps up their series with San Diego Sunday afternoon.
