A contentious series between the Rockies and Padres turned downright hostile in the third inning on Wednesday when Padres pitcher Luis Perdomo intentionally threw at Rockies All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado.
The pitch was in retaliation for a series of events that happened beginning Tuesday night. Rockies reliever Scott Oberg hit Manuel Margot in the ribs with a fastball late in a Padres victory on Tuesday night. Margot had to visit the hospital because of the injury he sustained. The Rockies said it was unintentional, but tempers were still hot Wednesday afternoon.
Perdomo hit Trevor Story in the first inning, which German Marquez followed by hitting Hunter Renfroe in the second. Things blew up in the third.
Arenado, Perdomo and Marquez were all ejected after the brawl. So were Padres catcher A.J. Ellis and Rockies outfielder Gerardo Parra.
The Rockies were winless entering the finale of the three-game series. Arenado was the leadoff hitter in the third inning with the game tied 0-0, before the fireworks erupted. Colorado went on to score five runs in the inning.
Expect suspensions to be upcoming for at least Arenado and Perdomo.
Hit batters are becoming frequent with the Rockies and Padres. Although Arenado was not hit, six different batters have been hit by pitches so far between the two teams this season.
