Courtland Sutton broke the 1,000-receiving-yard mark for the Denver Broncos this season, a feat the team hadn’t seen since his own performance back in 2019. He finished with 1,081 yards, more than double the next closest receiver, Marvin Mims, Jr. (503 yards). While Sutton’s individual success was a bright spot, the team’s overall receiving production left plenty to be desired.

A recent article by Pro Football Focus emphasized the Broncos’ need for receiver help. The article, which identified the biggest offseason need for every team not in the Super Bowl, pointed out that only two Broncos receivers reached 500 receiving yards in 2024.

Writer Zoltán Buday highlighted the lack of depth behind Courtland Sutton, stating: “While Courtland Sutton finished 16th with 1,081 receiving yards, he needs more support. His 75.5 PFF overall grade ranked just 32nd among wide receivers, suggesting he might be better suited as a complementary weapon if the Broncos can add a true No. 1 option this offseason.” Essentially, even with Sutton’s strong season, the Broncos are missing a true top-tier receiver to elevate the passing game.

In another PFF article, writer Mason Cameron provided a solution to the Broncos’ receiver woes: signing free agent Chris Godwin. Cameron believes Denver is the ideal landing spot for Godwin and, in his own words:

“Given the success Bo Nix showed in his first season — despite having few proven weapons at his disposal — Denver will want to supplement its receiving corps this offseason. Sean Payton has shown a propensity to feed targets to receivers with a proven play-making track record, which Godwin is no stranger to, having seen 130-plus targets in each of his past three full seasons.

Cameron argues that Nix’s promising performance and Payton’s offensive system, which favors high-volume receivers like Godwin, make Denver the perfect place for him to thrive.

Godwin has a history of success against the Broncos, with 11 receptions for 117 yards and two touchdowns in two career matchups. Even before his season-ending ankle injury last year, he was on pace for another strong season, racking up 50 receptions for 576 yards and five touchdowns in just seven games.

In fact, before the injury, Godwin boasted an impressive 85.7 PFF receiving grade, which ranked third among all receivers. As both the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles have demonstrated this year, a diverse and talented receiving corps is crucial for success in today’s NFL.

The Broncos’ 2025 salary cap situation looks significantly brighter than their 2024 outlook, offering them much greater flexibility for free-agent signings. Currently projected to have over $54 million in spending power, that figure could even increase depending on potential roster cuts. This abundance of cap space will allow the Broncos to be much more aggressive in pursuing top-tier talent and addressing team needs next offseason.
